At Bennetts of Mangawhai we are acutely aware of the fragility of the environment. We are situated in the beautiful coastal village of Mangawhai which is home to the endangered NZ Fairy Tern.
We are thankful for the opportunity to live and work in such a beautiful place and believe that with this opportunity comes responsibility. We take our responsibility seriously and have active programmes to reduce our impact on the environment.
We have worked hard to reduce power consumption in the factory. We use environmentally friendly light fittings, we have upgraded our refrigeration motors to energy conscious models, we use rain water collected in tanks and use washable gloves and towels rather than disposable. We are committed to environmentally friendly products and practices and are proudly moving all our packaging to recycled materials including cellulose bags rather than traditional oil based cellophane.
We use local ingredients wherever possible in both our chocolates and in the Café. We believe fresh and local produce is the only option for quality products and the reduced food miles is one part of this equation.
The Café embraces the seasonal and local in all its dishes. Head Chef, Rob, creates delicious seasonal menus based around the produce available locally. All meat used in the kitchen is cage and pen free and eggs used in both the factory and Café are free-range. Sustainable and ethical farming practices are important to us. The Café is innovative in its desire to minimise waste and creates world-class yoghurt and cheese from milk that would have been wasted.
Bennetts of Mangawhai proudly support two conservation projects – The NZ Fairy Tern Trust and Marunui Conservation.
The NZ Fairy Tern Trust does amazing work in our local area protecting New Zealand’s most critically threatened endemic bird. There are fewer than 40 of these birds left and Bennetts of Mangawhai are dedicated to helping save these beautiful little birds. We donate all profits from our Fairy Tern chocolate box to the Trust to help them continue the excellent work they do in our community.
Marunui Conservation manages a property on the Mangawhai side of the Brynderwyn Hills. Some Northland Brown Kiwi have been released into the special conservation area which means the little Kiwi’s cries can now be heard in the area for the first time in over fifty years. We have created milk and dark chocolate Kiwi tablets and a 50c donation from every purchase is made to MArunui Conservation to help save the Northland Brown Kiwi in our area.
